A historic day for all Malaysians as today they will be casting theirvotes for the 13th General Election (GE13), also known as the ‘Mother of all elections’.

Malaysians have begun voting at 8 am nationwide at 8,245 polling centres.

The centres, with 25,337 polling streams, opened at various places, 80 per cent of which were schools, multipurpose halls and community halls.

Of the 13,268,002 voters, only 12,992,661 are eligible to vote today as 272,387 of them , comprising mainly military and police personnel, were early voters who cast their ballots on April 30.

Foto: Educators Must Deliver Knowledge Based On Facts - Rais

TANJUNG MALIM, Nov 6 - Educators, particularly lecturers and teachers, should pass on knowledge based on facts including correct historical facts, so that what is delivered is acceptable to all levels of society, said Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.

The Information, Communications and Culture Minister said this group should recognise accurate facts through research and not deviate from acceptable facts.

"Our country has almost 60 universities that have produced renowned academicians, leaders and so on.

"If a culture of gathering and stating facts does not exist in us, we will be a confused people. That is why we must value facts. The way to this is through research and using facts that are regarded as acceptable in our arguments or presentation."

He said this after the presentation of the 1Malaysia students discount card (KADS1M), launching of a cross-campus programme and attending a minister mentor-students get-together at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, here, Tuesday.

I am not quite satisfied with the result. I couldn't find higher ground for my angle. Normally, when you have a chance to take a photo of a parade, high ground is a big advantage for you...

But nevermind..nobody care except me..

It was heartbreak for Great Britain as they watched from the stands where a solitary goal was enough to deny them a chance to play in the final against New Zealand.

But the story of the day was Pakistan’s fall from grace as the Asian Champions finished as wodden spoonists after they lost 2-1 to Great Britain.

The last time Pakistan had finished last was in the 1986 World Cup in London.

Argentina opened scoring in the 39th minute when a low drag flick by Pedro Ibarra went through the pads of Malaysian goalkeeper S. Kumar.

As for Pakistan, heads would surely roll upon their return and this fact was not discounted by coach Khajwa Junaid who said the one of the key reasons for their dismal performance was due to the fact they had included six juniors who played in the Junior Asia Cup early May in Malacca, Malaysia.

The six are Kashif Shah, Khalid Bhatti, M Rizwan Junior, Muhammad Tauseeq, Muhammad Umar Bhutta and Ali Shan

“We now realise that it was asking too much from these youngsters who could not coipe with the demands of playing in back to back tournament,” said Junaid.

“We really had no choice but to include them as this is the team that will leave for the Europe tour two days upon our return to Pakistan.”

Junaid said that they would leave it to the national selectors with regards to the inclusion of any of the eight players that faced disciplinary issues after they participated in the unsanctioned World Hockey Series in India last March.

Rehan Butt and Shakeel Abbasi were fined USD10,870 while Waseem Ahmed, Zeeshan Ashraf, Imran Warsi, Adnan Maqsood, Tariq Aziz and Mudassar Ali Khan received fines of USD2,717 each.

“The chief selector Hanif Khan has been monitoring the performance of this team via the TV telecasts and I have been in touch with him,” said Junaid.

“So far the inclusion of any of those players has never been brought up as we are awaiting word from FIH with regards to the sanctions against these players.”

Pakistan’s last placing was their worst ever performance in the history of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup since the inaugural event. Prior to this the three times champion’s worst finish was a sixth placing in a eight team event in 2007.

“Not that I am offering excuses for our performances here but the reality is that we failed to convert the chances that we created,” said Junaid.

“We were not consistent and in some matches we held the edge but could not finish off the game.”

As for Great Britain coach Jason Lee, the team that played in the Azlan Shah Cup will be retained for the Olympics with two players to be left out.

“We have 18 players here and the final squad for the Olympics will come from this team” said Jason.

“We would have made the final had we not dropped vital points against Malaysia where we were 3-1 up but conceded two late goals.

“But on the hindsight it has been a good tournament for me as we had a variety of opponents and I picked up a lot of pointers that will serve us well this summer.”

Meanwhile Korea defeated New Zealand 1-0 in a match that really had no bearing to the fortunes of both teams.

New Zealand had already assured themselves of a place in Sunday’s final. Korea scored the winner in the 68th minute through Jang Jong Hyun.

Argentina defeated Malaysia 1-0 to qualify for the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia.

KUALA KANGSAR, May 16 - Innovative teachers are quality teachers needed in this era of globalisation with an increasingly knowledge- and innovation-driven economy, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The deputy prime minister said innovative teachers were capable of equipping students with new millennium skills such as the ability to think wisely, problem solving and having a high level of creativity.

"In this context, before entering the classroom, an innovative teacher would have studied the curriculum and evaluated the results he or she wishes to achieve," he said in his speech at the national-level Teachers Day 2012 celebration themed "Innovative Teachers Boost National Education Transformation", at Dewan Jubli Perak, here, Wednesday.

Muhyiddin said innovative teachers would not be tied down to a certain method of teaching and learning in the classroom, but would instead think outside the box to find new methodology and approaches that were more effective.

The priority of innovative teachers is ensuring the students are capable of using the knowledge taught in the classroom, not just to succeed in the examinations but to also be able to solve problems faced in the real world.

"Innovative teachers are teachers who can provide a most conducive learning environment and the biggest space for the students to develop wise thinking."

Muhyiddin said teachers with the ability to evaluate the achievements and potential of their students holistically and always taking proactive measures to improve the students' level of excellence in order to be competitive in an increasingly challenging world, were also innovative teachers.

"Innovative teachers are teachers who always think about the future challenges their students will face after they leave school, and whether the knowledge they gained in school can give them the edge in competing in the real world."

Muhyiddin was confident that if all teachers in this country were innovative teachers, the goal of producing human capital that were highly knowledgeable, creative, innovative and skilful could be achieved.

To strengthen the culture of innovativeness in school, the Education and Higher Education ministries were drawing up an Innovative Human Capital Development Action Plan to inculcate a culture of innovativeness and creativity among students, he said.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said through this action plan, schools would act as the implementing agencies for a creative teaching and learning process.

"It is hoped that the Innovative Human Capital Development Action Plan will be fully used by teachers as a guideline to achieve the national aspiration of raising competitiveness which is measured by the people's capacity to be innovative."

He said cooperation between the ministry and Malaysia Innovation Agency to enculturate thinking skills through the i-Think programme was also a new approach suitable to be used by teachers to improve mastery among the students.

"This programme is being pioneered by 10 schools and we hope to extend it nationwide to improve the quality of teaching and learning," he added.

At today's celebration, Muhyiddin also presented the National Education Leadership Award to former Education deputy director-general Datuk Omar Mohd Hashim and National Private School Eminent Teacher Award to Datuk Hassan Harun.

Four former educators also received the National Eminent Teacher Award 2012. They are Datuk Ahmad Azmey Abu Talib, Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching, Mohd Azman Abdul Rashid and Lim Ia Lee @ Lim Irene.

THE Regent of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, has warned the people against manipulating religious issues.

He also expressed worry over recent incidents which saw religious issues being openly debated.

“Don’t light the religious fire as it can burn you up and destroy the state,” he said when opening the State Assembly session at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan here today.

He said of late, non-Muslims had crossed religious boundaries by challenging Islamic matters via statements that made fun of Islamic laws and the faith of Muslims.

“Advice to Muslims on their faith and Syariah law by Islamic scholars is being questioned and debated openly by non-Muslims.

“This has crossed the religious border. The etiquette of respecting and non-interfering in the affairs of other religions must be adhered to.”

Islam’s position is contained in the Federal Constitution and should not not be taken literally but interpreted in a holistic manner together with the other relevant provisions to ensure that the real purpose of these provisions is not manipulated to deny the rights of Muslims.
